In the main, the Caribbean has had a relatively static energy platform, adopting conventional energy sources and global practices. Most recently and more widespread has been the regional transition to cleaner and renewable energy sources. However, until technology and economic accessibility are addressed, our reality is a diverse energy mix.

Renewable Energy

In addition to combating the harmful effects of greenhouse gases, most countries in the region are financially burdened with substantial fuel import expenditure and consequential export of precious foreign exchange reserves. The Caribbean has an abundance of untapped renewable energy resources which have become more economically accessible as technology has progressed and products and equipment have become more attractively priced.

LNG

As a transition fuel, LNG can contribute to the diversification of the energy landscape in the region. LNG is a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels, not only in the power generation sector, but also in its emerging significance in vessel bunkering.

Conventional Power

Throughout the Caribbean, traditional fossil fuels, in particular, heavy fuel oil and diesel, are the primary sources of power generation. Notwithstanding environmental considerations and the recent rapid growth of clean energy sources, for most countries, this position will remain until cleaner energy sources become more established and affordable to the average household.
